A Beautiful Day and an Unexpected Tour

So because they didn't give us much information before the program started, many of us are just now realizing that the entirety of our thematic seminar will be focused on Alzheimer's Disease.  Not bad!  Today we went to a hospital in France to learn a bit about the French health system and the strategies and facilities for diagnosis and treatment.

It's not actually as grand as it sounds; Geneva is located on the border of France and Switzerland, so the city is spread across the two borders.  Plus, because of the Schengen (sp?) Area, we literally walked into France sans checkpoint stop.

Because it was a longer journey, we all had to wake up at 6:00 to meet in Geneva at the correct time.  So, being a bit tired, the fact that the presentations were long and both in French was a little rough.  Earle served as the translator for the first one, and though I have yet to describe Earle because no words can do him justice, he managed (in Earle fashion) to add his own flourish to everything that the doctor said so that it was a least twice as long as the original.  It actch-ually (a favorite word of his) became more of his presentation than anyone else's.  We ran late and everyone was starving by 12:15 since we all forgot to bring euros.  Being tired, hungry, and mentally strained, we were all happy to get out of France and start the commute back to Nyon for class...

The directors are fond of letting us find our own way back to Nyon once our morning briefing/presentations are over.  I appreciate the self-sufficiency this fosters, but today we definitely could have used some guidance reentering Switzerland.  All 22 of us students hopped on a bus outside the hospital; the correct bus, but in the wrong direction.  So, we toured Haute-Savoie for quite some time before realizing our mistake.   Our misdirection ended up costing us so much time that I did not return to Morges until 3:00!

Luckily my French class had been cancelled for the afternoon so I went straight home and went for a run to clear my head and refresh.  It was absolutely beautiful today and I ran to another village that I hope to further explore in the future... at some point I need to talk about the amazing running experiences I have been having and take/post some pictures!  It seems like there is so much to do and see that coupled with being a student here I'm managing to fill my time quite easily despite the slower pace of life.  So, my apologies-- I wish I could share everything but it's simply not possible!

Anyway, we have our first "review session" tomorrow morning in which we discuss all of our readings and lectures so far.  I'm a bit nervous that I haven't devoted enough time to reading, so I better stop blogging and get to work.
